What Training Is Required for RCFE Staff in California?
California RCFEs have specific training requirements for direct-care staff, including initial training for new employees and ongoing annual training.
Initial Staff Training
40 Hours: New RCFE direct-care staff must complete 40 hours of initial training, divided into two phases:
Phase 1: Before Working Independently — 20 Hours
Training covers essential topics including dementia care, hospice care, emergency preparedness, cultural competency, resident rights, medication management, and aging-related care.
Phase 2: Within the First Four Weeks — 20 Hours
4 additional hours of online coursework
16 hours of hands-on, facility-based training, including dementia care and job shadowing
CCO provides the 24 hours of online coursework outlined in our training checklist. The remaining 16 hands-on hours must be coordinated and documented by the facility. Additional First Aid and Elder Abuse training requirements also apply.
Annual Staff Training — 20 Hours
RCFE direct-care staff must complete 20 hours of annual training, including:
8 hours: Dementia care
4 hours: Hospice care and related topics
8 hours: Additional approved training topics
CCO offers courses covering these subjects and additional areas such as infection prevention, emergency preparedness, diabetes, food safety, and resident care.
